Mission
Trip
New Orleans, July 2007
By going to New Orleans, I have realized
how much work still needs to be done. On the tour we took through the
most devastated areas, I was surprised by the amount of damage. There
were some houses that were completely gone and only the foundations were left.
It was shocking to see all of the FEMA trailers. There were many trailer
parks, some were huge and the trailers were very close together. Also,
outside many houses there were trailers that the owners lived in. Two
years after Katrina the homes are not finished and people are still stuck
in trailers. Katie (from Lutheran Disaster Response) said that it would
take another 8-10 years before New Orleans would be totally rebuilt.
That seems outrageous and makes me feel even more proud of the work we did
in New Orleans.
