Mission
Trip
New Orleans, July 2007
When we first set out for New Orleans I knew
that I was going to see great devastation. When we got there we really didn’t
see the devastation that people tell you about. But the night that we took
the driving look at the 9th ward (the place that got hit the hardest by the
storm) it really sunk in. How huge this storm was and the vast number of
people that it affected. When you looked around there was nothing, all that
was left of most houses was either the frame or just simply cement slab used
to be where someone’s home once stood. The first two days that we worked I
felt as if I really didn’t do any work to help anyone by just painting a
house porch and steps of a deck. But after we took that tour I realized that
every little bit helps. These people lost so much, basically everything they
owned. When we gutted a house one day an we were taking a water break outside
and looked on the floor and saw pictures. As I picked them up an took a closer
look at them, I realized that they were pictures of that family’s trip to
Disney World, and inside the house there was a Lion King DVD sitting on like
a hole in the wall. This made it so real to me that people lived here and
just had to up and leave without almost all their things. I could never fathom
the idea of having to just leave my house on a moments notice without all
of my things that I love so much. Without pictures of family and trips we
have been on. But, I think also that this trip helped us all come closer
together. Not just by being in the car with people for 22 hours, but just
spending time at the center we stayed at. We would just sit around and have
fun together without TV, movies, and other things. We played games and just
talked. I think over all this was an amazing experience for me. It really
opened my eyes to how other people live and how privileged I am.
