Mission
Trip
New Orleans, July 2007
Empowered by the grace and love of Jesus,
we are committed to growing a community of faith.
I have been fortunate to have take part in three mission trips - Ohio,
Maryland, and this past July, New Orleans. In New Orleans, most of our group
had one or two sites they worked on that week. I was blessed with a new site
each day. That’s right - 4 days, 4 different sites. I have to say the first
day set the tone for the week - for me anyway. The job was simple, a little
mundane, even. Who would think that pulling nails out of 2 X 4’s and cleaning
up the remainder of the insulation would be so hard? I soon realized that
my being at this particular house was very important. You see, this house
could not move forward to the next step without completion of our task for
the day. For with God nothing shall be impossible. Luke 1:37. Not one site
that I was on was completed by the end of the week. But I know that we left
them so other volunteers, such as ourselves, could continue the work.
Each one of the three mission trips I have been part of have made me more
aware of how blessed I am. I have a roof over my head, food to fill me, a
wonderful family and great friends. I am part of a church family that supports
a few local ministries such as the Rescue Mission, the CROP Walk, food pantries
and the like. But I think our church community can do more. After my involvement
with each mission trip, I always come home full of ideas and dreams. But
like most of us, life just gets in the way and my dreams are put on the back
burner. My dream is to see this congregation be more open to each other.
Be available to assist one another in many ways - using whatever talent you
have been blessed with. I invite all of you to take a look at your own lives.
No matter how many bumps in the road you have encountered, there is always
someone who has a harder life. I invite you also to do as our Mission Statement
says and become a disciple of the word of Jesus. Do for your neighbors, without
being asked. Have the thought of helping others be as much a part of your
life as breathing.
There are two commercials on TV that show how one act of kindness dominos
to another. I have no idea what the commercials are advertising, but I was
struck by how the actions of one person affects another.
Erma Bombeck once said - “When I stand before God at the end of my life
I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could
say, I used everything you gave me.”
